Growth in photobioreactors
Growth in photobioreactors

The growth in photobioreactors, a closed and secure system, makes it possible to obtain pure spirulina of superior quality, free of any contamination and very rich in phycocyanin.

Through a dedicated technological approach, Xelliss has created its own extraction process called EPNA (Phyco Native Active Extraction) which makes it possible to obtain a high quality and highly concentrated phycocyanine from growth in photobioreactors.

What is “phycocyanin”? img

“Spirulina is a freshwater photosynthetic organism. Naturally in contact with many oxidising elements during its growth, this microalgae produces a wide variety of antioxidant compounds to protect itself from these very aggressive growth conditions. For example, phycocyanin is a cyan-blue coloured protein specific to spirulina, which plays a role in photosynthesis and an antioxidant role in the cell structure of the microalgae.”

How can phycocyanin stimulate the immune system? img

Chinese researchers have shown that phycocyanin, a respiratory protein pigment unique to spirulina, is involved in the bone marrow, the site of erythropoiesis, by stimulating the evolution and differentiation of stem cells of the red and white blood lines.

How can phycocyanin help us recover after intense effort? img

Phycocyanin accelerates the elimination of lactates, in particular with the stimulation of lactate dehydrogenase. This enzyme makes it possible to absorb lactates in the liver and transform them into energy that can be used by the cells, ATP.

The rapid elimination of Lactates consequently leads to an increase in VO2 max (VO2 max is “the body's ability to transport and use oxygen during maximum effort”).

Lactates: what is that? img

Lactates, or lactic acid, are the "waste products" produced by muscle contraction during the production of energy during exercise, which require the activation of many specific metabolic pathways for their elimination. It is these lactates that accumulate in the muscles and cause stiffness, fatigue and muscle cramps. These painful manifestations that generally accompany the resumption of sporting activity, an effort that is too long in relation to one's level of training or an exercise that is too intense. Recovery then depends on the ability to recycle this waste.
